First Ladies: From Martha Washington to Barbara Bush
Published in Hardcover by Greenwich Pr (May, 1990)
Author: Linda Decesare
Average review score:

Lovely first ladies...
This particular edition is from 1990 but is still a lovely book to view and find out about the First Ladies! The "portraits are suitable for framing" and have detailed historical references.
The contents end with Barbara Bush as the Presidents' first lady.
At this time of this review there have been more first ladies added...Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. Two more powerhouse first ladies!! Looking for more from this publisher! Great for reports, collectors, and general information.

Flashmaps Washington Dc (Flashmaps)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (March, 1994)
Authors: Marcy S. Pritchard, Flashmaps, and Fodors
Average review score:

The best book of maps for any city
Even though I live in New York, I refer to the NYC addition weekly. On a visit to DC, I found it in some cases to be easier to use and read than those of AAA. The book format is also handy to carry around while strolling DC's neighborhoods.

Tall tales and recipes from Sleepless in Seattle houseboats
Anyone who has ever lived on a boat or near the water will love this book. The recipes are great and the tall tales of life aboard are wonderful. Everything from a romantic dinner for two, to a feast for hundreds ( see Bastille Day Pig Luau).

Fooling America: How Washington Insiders Twist the Truth and Manufacture the Conventional Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (July, 1992)
Author: Robert Parry
Average review score:

AN INDISPUTABLE CONFIRMATION OF "MANUFACTURED CONSENT"
Despite the Kirkus' reviewer's oddly negative reference to a mass of "newspaper-like detail," which refers to the hard documentation that makes Parry's case, the fact of the matter is that Parry has clearly demonstrated that only the "truth" as it is cut and pasted in accordance with the prevailing doctrinal parameters is permitted to be known. This is a well-known if frequently ignored reality in American political culture. I find it highly suspicious that two of his other books (Colin Powell: The Record Revealed, The October Surprise X-Files), all of recent vintage, are not even listed by Amazon. You have books like Michael Meiers' book on Jonestown, which was never offered by Mellen for general book sale; but you have no listing for these two books by Parry. Amazon, check yourself out!

Francesca Vigilucci : Washington DC 1913
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Aladdin Library (01 December, 2000)
Author: Kathleen Duey
Average review score:

An excellant addition to the American Diaries series.
Thirteen-year-old Francesca Vigilucci has always lived a privileged life in Washington, D.C., as the daughter of a wealthy lawyer. The year is 1913, and things are changing for women in the United States - although it seems as though life in the Vigilucci household is no different than it has always been. Francesca knows that her parents expect her to marry a wealthy man and raise a family, but that's not the life she dreams of. She longs to attend college and start an exciting career, instead of living a life like her mother's - a life that would be boring to Francesca. The only person she can share her dreams with is Laura, a girl her age who works as a servant in the Vigilucci home. The girls long to attend the suffragist parade to show their support for the women fighting to win the right to vote, but with Francesca's grumpy, traditional aunt in town, will they be able to find a way? This was another excellent addition to the American Diaries series. Kathleen Duey brought to life both the suffragist movement and the varying social conditions of the wealthy and the impoverished in early twentieth century America. As always, I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (August, 2002)
Author: Anne Phillips
Average review score:

An informative and inspiring book
"The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial," by Anne Phillips, tells the story behind the monument to one of the United States' most important presidents. The book combines a straightforward text with a wealth of photographs (both color photos and historic black-and-white photos). There is also a map of the memorial.

The book contains a brief biography of FDR and tells the historical story of the memorial from the early planning stage to its dedication in 1997. Philips discusses the contributions of architect Lawrence Halprin and the other creative people who helped give life to the memorial. There are many images of the statues and inscriptions at the memorial. I especially liked the statue of FDR's Scottish terrier, Fala, and the inscription of his Four Freedoms. Phillips also discusses the controversy over whether or not to depict FDR's disability in the memorial.

This book is very educational, and also inspiring. I've never seen the FDR memorial, and this book makes me want to visit it. And that's probably the best compliment I can pay to a book of this nature.
